Another Class with David Howard

Maybe I'm a ballet-nerd for loving this... Here's an Intermediate/Advanced ballet class featuring some "OGs" of the ballet world -- David Howard accompanied by Lynn Stanford in piano.  The video is dated and low resolution, but it's worth watching to see masters at work.  The students named here all went on to have illustrious careers in ballet.

This class was actually designed for students to follow along.  It came out on VHS tape.  (Am I dating myself by admitting I know what that is?)  You'll notice that the combinations aren't as physically extreme would be an Intermediate/Advanced ballet class today.  It is fascinating to see how far ballet has progressed in just the few decades since this class was filmed.

You'll also notice how close the students are standing; that's classic New York City ballet class environment for you; small studios with lots of students and part of your training is learning how not to kick the person next to you.

Enjoy this trip back in time!

A note about Lynn Stanford:  He first accompanied ballet classes in Dallas, Texas at the request of the great ballerina, Margot Fonteyn. Margot taught Lynn how to accompany a dance class and encouraged his improvisational style. In 1973 he moved to New York City and spent twelve years as principal pianist at the School of American Ballet. During this "heyday of dance," Lynn played for all the leading dancers of the time while creating a new approach and style of music for ballet class.

You may not know it but you've heard lot's of Lynn's music in our class.  He was the "staple" in ballet class music from the way back in the 1970s.  His many recordings are a testament to his wonderful talent and serve as a reminder of the innovations he has brought to dance.
