Abs vs. Core, and More!

I really like this new video from Sarah, at Breaking Ballet, about the difference between workouts for "abs" (abdominals) and workouts for "core" (so much more); and highlighting the benefits of a ballet-based exercise program.

Abs and core not the same thing but are often confused.  Training for each can be approached differently. Check out the video to learn about the difference!

Here are some of points I liked most from Sarah's video:
  • The term "abdominals" generally refer to the muscles in the front of the torso.  Abdominal workouts primarily target these muscles to improve definition and strength in the body's mid-section.

  • The term "core" includes a number of interconnected muscles that stabilize and support the spine and pelvis.  These muscles include the abdominals, but also the muscles in the lower back, sides, hips, pelvis, buttocks and upper thighs.

  • Core strength and stability means more than just having six-pack abs.  Having a strong core enhances your overall stability, balance, and posture, reducing the risk of injury in daily activities and in other forms of exercise.

  • Ballet-inspired fitness programs offer a graceful and powerful approach to strengthening and sculpting your core muscles.  The benefits include better body alignment, posture, and interoceptive awareness.  By engaging muscles with precision and control, ballet-inspired movements help strengthen the entire core.

  • By incorporating fluid, controlled movements that include equal amounts of muscle contraction and flexion, ballet exercises develop long, lean muscles resulting in a slender, yet sculpted aesthetic.

  • Building a strong, stable core through ballet exercise will enhance your dancing, infuse you with grace and confidence, and reduce your risk of injury both while dancing and in every day life.
