Ballet Arm Workout

I love that the internet allows us to share in ideas from all over the world!  In this video, from Grand Art Ballet Studio, in Budapest, Lilla guides you through a series of arm workouts using ballet movements.  These exercises will work both your arms and your upper back.

You don't have to do the whole series together.  Feel free to do only the exercises you like, in the amounts you are comfortable with.

KEEP IT SAFE:  There are a few things to watch out for in this video:

  1. She does a lot of repetitions in each series of exercises; if the number of repetitions in a given series is too much for you, simply do as many as you can manage, then rest and gently shake-out your arms while waiting for the next series to come up.

  2. At about minute 2:00, she includes releves into the exercise routine.  This can be challenging if you don't have great balance.  Give it a try, but if balance issues get you, just revert to doing the exercise with plies, or with straight legs, or take a break and wait for the next series to come up.

  3. At about minute 8:00, she does a series of stretches from a plank position; if this is difficult for you, or if you have shoulder issues, keep your knees on the floor and just do the stretch from an "all-fours" position.

  4. At about minute 9:00, she does some press-ups with her arms behind her back.  This can be precarious for anyone with shoulder issues.  If you have bad shoulders, skip this exercise.
