Perfecting Your Plié

Plié is often called the foundation of ballet, and for good reason -- it appears in almost everything we do, from jumps and turns to simple transitions between steps. I really like this video from, Caroline Simpkins at Ballet Science, that takes a close look at both demi plié and grand plié in first, second, fourth, and fifth positions, explaining how each should work and why proper technique matters.

She also covers several of the most common corrections dancers receive in class. From understanding when the heels should stay on the floor (and when they shouldn't), to maintaining proper alignment, tracking the knees correctly, and avoiding common mistakes in second-position grand plié, the video offers practical tips that can make a big difference in your technique.

If you've ever wondered whether your plié is quite right, this is a great video to watch. The explanations are clear, the demonstrations are easy to follow, and the corrections address many of the issues dancers of all levels encounter.  A correctly executed, stronger plié makes you less prone to injury, and creates a stronger foundation for everything else you do in ballet.  This one of the better plié tutorials I've encountered.  Check it out!
